From DWTC to DEC: How Dubai’s new exhibition hub is transforming the event landscape
Dubai’s exhibition scene is evolving. The move from DWTC to DEC marks a new, smarter era for large-scale events — one focused on innovation, connectivity, and sustainability. See how Messe.ae is adapting to lead this shift.
For more than three decades, the Dubai World Trade Centre (DWTC) has been the cornerstone of the Middle East’s exhibition and conference industry — hosting iconic trade events such as GITEX Global, Arab Health, and The Big 5. It has served as a vital gateway for international business, connecting markets and accelerating the region’s reputation as a global meeting point for innovation and commerce.
Yet, as Dubai continues to evolve into a smarter and more sustainable city, the focus of the exhibition world is shifting. The emergence of the Dubai Exhibition Centre (DEC) at Expo City Dubai marks the beginning of a new chapter — one built on innovation, connectivity, and long-term growth. This shift represents not just a relocation, but a strategic transformation of the UAE’s MICE sector (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions).
The Dubai Exhibition Centre made its debut during Expo 2020 Dubai, introducing Phase 1 of a larger multi-stage development plan approved by the Government of Dubai. The long-term vision aims to establish DEC as one of the world’s most advanced, flexible, and sustainable event destinations.
Phase 1 (Completed in 2022): This initial stage introduced 64,000 m² of permanent exhibition halls and 30,000 m² of flexible temporary space. These facilities successfully hosted international exhibitions and conferences throughout and after Expo 2020, setting a strong operational foundation.
Phase 2 (Ongoing, completion expected in 2026): The second phase will expand the venue to include approximately 140,000 m² of additional exhibition space, large column-free halls, and upgraded visitor capacity for up to 50,000 attendees daily. It will also integrate advanced sustainability systems and energy-efficient operations.
Phase 3 (Planned for 2027–2030): Once completed, this phase will turn DEC into a fully integrated complex covering nearly 180,000 m². It will include hotels, offices, retail areas, and leisure facilities, creating a dynamic business ecosystem within Expo City Dubai. With an estimated investment of AED 10 billion, the expansion is projected to double Dubai’s total exhibition capacity by 2033, supporting more than 600 large-scale events each year.
Situated at the heart of Expo City Dubai, the DEC benefits from exceptional transport and urban planning. The venue is directly linked to the Dubai Metro Red Line (Route 2020) via the Expo 2020 Station, ensuring seamless travel for visitors and exhibitors.
The surrounding district follows the “15-minute city” concept, meaning that key amenities — including hotels, offices, restaurants, and public transport — are all within short walking distance. The Rove Expo City Hotel currently anchors the accommodation offering, with more hospitality projects in progress to meet future demand.
Accessibility is another key advantage: DEC is located just minutes from Al Maktoum International Airport, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, and Dubai’s main logistics corridors, providing convenient connections for local and international event participants.
Unlike traditional exhibition venues, the Dubai Exhibition Centre was conceived with sustainability as a fundamental principle. The venue incorporates:
These initiatives directly support Dubai’s 2040 Urban Master Plan and the city’s ambition to become a model for sustainable urban development and green event management.
For exhibitors, stand contractors, and event organizers, the transition from DWTC to DEC presents both new opportunities and operational challenges.
For companies such as Messe.ae, which specializes in custom exhibition stand design and construction across the UAE, early adaptation to DEC’s advanced technical standards brings a strong competitive edge. A deep understanding of the venue’s operational procedures, sustainability policies, and logistical requirements ensures successful project delivery and exceptional client experiences.
Beyond exhibitions, Expo City Dubai is developing into a complete urban ecosystem that integrates residential, educational, business, and technology zones. It hosts global corporations, start-ups, and sustainability-driven organizations — forming a new business hub for the future of global commerce and innovation.
This synergy between DEC’s large-scale event infrastructure and Expo City’s innovation-driven environment cements Dubai’s position as a global leader in the MICE industry and a preferred destination for international exhibitions and conferences.
The transition from the Dubai World Trade Centre to the Dubai Exhibition Centre signifies more than a geographic shift — it marks a forward-looking transformation for the entire exhibition landscape of the region.
For stand builders, exhibitors, and event professionals, success in this new era will depend on adaptability, technical precision, and an unwavering commitment to sustainability.
